Just Birding
Day dedicated only to bird watching with different ecosystem options such as coastal wetlands, inland valley, mountain ranges and the beautiful high Andean ecosystems known as bofedales.
For this activity we have ideal camouflage clothing to achieve closeness without interrupting the normal behavior of the different species, which allows us to take better photographic records and observe them more closely.
We can go in search of the endemic birds of Chile such as Chiricoca (Ochetorhynchus melanurus), Turca (Pteroptochos megapodius), Northern Churrín (Scytalopus fuscus), Tricahue Parrot (Cyanoliseus patagonus), Tapaculo (Scelorchilus albicollis), Chilean partridge (Nothoprocta perdicaria ), tench (Mimus thenca) observe hummingbirds and the beauty of shore and sea birds and their great migrations.
Among the places where we make sightings are:
Elquí River Wetland
A true oasis of biodiversity in the middle of the city of La Serena, declared an Urban Wetland in 2022 and being part of Coquimbo Bay, declared a Site of Regional Importance for Shorebirds since 2022 (WHSRN / WHSRN) in Chile.
This wetland has a vascular flora of more than 200 species (Ecoterra 2016), 177 species of birds, both migratory and resident, have been recorded so far (eBird 2024), 7 species of fish, 6 species of mammals, 5 species of reptiles and 3 species of amphibians (Ecoterra 2016).
A place to escape and connect with nature just steps from the city.
El Culebrón Wetland
Located in the city of Coquimbo, part of Coquimbo Bay, therefore a Site of Regional Importance for horebirds (WHSRN/WHSRN), this impressive natural sanctuary is an ideal place for bird watching with 151 registered species such as the beautiful Blue Heron ( Egretta caerulea), a large amount of flora and the beautiful Zapallar Lizard (Liolaemus zapallarensis) that prowls and enjoys the sun in the corners of this wonderful place.
The work of the Algueros, declared “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Chile”, stands out in the “El Culebrón Wetland”.
This ancestral tradition that has been transmitted from generation to generation is a symbol of connection between the community and the sea, an economic activity and way of life that reflects the strength and spirit of the algueros community.
We will have the opportunity to hear from the algueros themselves about their work and history.
Punta de Teatinos and Laguna Saladita
Located north of the city of La Serena; with 157 registered species.
A place of scientific interest where archaeologists, environmentalists and nature lovers seek to learn about the biodiversity and rich archaeological heritage present in the place.
Lagunillas Wetland (Adelaida Lagoon)
A refuge for nature, located 24 km. south of the city of Coquimbo, this place also known as “Laguna Adelaida”. It is part of the wetland network of the Coquimbo Region.
The Morillos Beach ecosystem is a coastal ecosystem composed of the Laguna Adelaida wetland, an extensive dune field that contains predominantly ancient dunes. It ranges from the Morrillos Rocks to the rocky peninsula where Playa del Francés is located. It is characterized by integrating a great heterogeneity of landscape units; rocky sectors, large sand dunes, estuary, wetland, hills, ocean are related and mixed, generating a large global ecosystem where species of different origins converge, registering 130 species of birds such as the Coscoroba Swan (Coscoroba coscoroba), Northern Tern (Sterna hirundo), Snowy Plover (Anarhynchus nivosus), among others and flora such as Adesmia littoralis that is present exclusively in this place and Senecio coquimbensis.
